Milton Fire Department launches annual home safe program.

The Home Safe Home Program is a proactive education program designed to provide fire and life safety information to the public. Operating annually from June to September, Milton Fire Department staff go door-to-door, educating residents on fire safety and promoting free home fire safety inspections.

The inspections provide homeowners with vital information on how to protect their loved ones and keep them safe from fire and associated hazards. Topics covered during the inspections include smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, fire extinguishers, sump pumps and developing a fire escape plan. Last year, Milton Fire Department staff visited over 2,000 homes.

“Most fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep. That is why it is so important for everyone to have working smoke alarms and CO detectors and for everyone to know what to do when they sound,” said Acting Fire Chief Dave Pratt. “Working smoke alarms and CO detectors will give you the early warning you need for everyone to get out safely.”

“We certainly don’t want or expect to be handing out tickets as a result of this program,” said Fire Prevention Captain Steve Ellis. “The Milton Fire Department will work with homeowners to make sure they have the correct number of smoke alarms and CO detectors for their home and that they are in working order. We will do whatever is necessary to make sure everyone is adequately protected.”

Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements can result in a ticket for $235 or a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations.
