General Jonathan Vance will retire. The Chief of Canada’s Armed Forces made the announcement in a letter dated July 23, published on Twitter.

“You, the members of the Canadian Armed Forces, have been the inspiration for my life, and I have given you my all,” Vance wrote. He served 39 years in the army holding command posts in the war in Afghanistan, as well as against the Islamic State.

“During his tenure, General Vance has led the Canadian Armed Forces through transformative change through the development of Canada’s new defence policy, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said.

Vance was appointed in July, 2015. He led the forces as they deployed to help Canadian communities through COVID-19. He will remain in the job until a successor is appointed by an order-in-council
