In a remarkable display of unity and collective action, a sold-out gathering of 250 individuals from the Hamilton and Halton legal communities came together at the 22nd Annual Sopinka United Way Legal Luncheon to support those in need.
This year’s event was honoured by the presence of Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin, Canada’s first Indigenous Supreme Court Justice, renowned for her distinguished 20-year career in the legal community. The luncheon, dedicated to the late John Sopinka, a respected Supreme Court of Canada judge, has, for the past 22 years, raised close to $3 million for the United Way. The goal for this year’s fundraiser is to exceed $300,000, building on the substantial impact these funds have made in providing essential support to vulnerable community members.
Hamilton’s unique status as the only Canadian city without a law school draws superior court justices exclusively for this event, marking the city’s distinctive position on the national legal stage.
Brad Park, President and CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton, expressed gratitude for the participation of federal and provincial courts, highlighting their commitment to uplifting the lives of the most vulnerable in the community.
Tricia Sampson, Manager of Education and Life Skill Programming with EFRY Hope and Help for Women, delivered a compelling presentation on human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Ontario, emphasizing the impact of generous donations on EFRY’s local community initiatives.
Jarvis Scott, recipient of the John F. Evans Award of Community Distinction, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to personal injury and insurance mediation and his dedicated support for United Way campaigns over the past two decades.
The Sopinka United Way Legal Luncheon is a powerful demonstration of the legal community’s ability to inspire collective action and underscore the critical importance of community support. The event took place at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel, symbolizing the ongoing commitment to positively impacting the local community.
