The Town of Oakville has been ranked as the 10th most livable city in Canada and the highest-ranking municipality in Ontario, according to The Globe and Mail’s second annual “Most Livable Cities” study.
The study analyzed 448 Canadian cities and evaluated municipalities in 10 categories, including access to amenities and health care, community vibrancy, demographics, economy, education, transportation, safety, climate, and housing affordability. A holistic review of its strengths across these areas determined each city’s overall livability.
Oakville performed particularly well in several key categories. It ranked second in Ontario and Canada for access to health care, third in Ontario and 23rd in Canada for community vibrancy, and fourth in Ontario and 16th in Canada for access to education. The town also placed fifth in Ontario and 85th in Canada for climate, seventh in Ontario and 28th in Canada for access to amenities, and eighth in Ontario and 32nd in Canada for its robust economy and transportation.
The study also highlighted Oakville’s strong sense of community, with 72 percent of residents reporting a strong sense of belonging. The town ranked 19th nationwide for raising kids and 16th for supporting entrepreneurs.
“This recognition highlights the efforts of our Council, staff, and engaged residents in making Oakville a truly livable community,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “Together, we’ve created a town that excels in livability across Ontario and Canada.”
Jane Clohecy, Oakville’s Chief Administrative Officer, emphasized the town’s commitment to creating an inclusive and appealing environment. “We work hard at the town to make sure Oakville is the most livable municipality for everyone in our community, inviting residents, businesses, and visitors alike to enjoy the beauty and opportunities of our town and all we have to offer,” she said.
The Globe and Mail launched its “Most Livable Cities” study in 2023 when Oakville was ranked 29th in Canada and fourth in Ontario among 100 municipalities.
Oakville has also received other accolades recently, including being named the top overall participating city in the Culture Days Top Participating Community List and the top participating mid-sized city for the third consecutive year.
