Milton, one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities, is experiencing a cricket boom fueled by its passionate South Asian population. Cricket lovers in Milton are transforming local parks into vibrant cricket hubs, mirroring the energy seen in countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
The recent ICC T20 World Cup in the United States further ignited this passion. Many Milton residents travelled across the border to experience world-class cricket firsthand. For cricket fans, the tournament was more than just a sporting event—it was a chance to relive the excitement of a game that holds a special place in their hearts.
“Milton is becoming a new cricket hub,” said Fiaz Ahmad, a resident and club cricketer. “We’ve been playing cricket since we were kids, and it was our dream to see the sport become a way of life. Watching Canada’s national team in the T20 World Cup has reignited our passion for the game. Now, cricket is becoming a trend in Milton, and we’re proud to be part of it.”
With the South Asian population making up a significant part of Milton’s community, the love for cricket is spreading rapidly. Local leagues, community events, and grassroots programs are flourishing, providing opportunities for both children and adults to play.
Milton Councillor Adil Khalqi said the town recognizes the growing demand for cricket facilities. “I’m pleased to announce that council has approved the addition of three new cricket batting cages at Optimist Park as part of the 2025 Milton budget,” he said. “Additionally, plans for more cricket pitches will be explored as part of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan update, scheduled for Spring 2025.”
Farah Khan, mother of two young sons, said her children see hope when they watch Canada’s national players on the international stage. “Cricket belongs to us as much as it does to the rest of the world,” she said.
Once dominated by soccer and baseball players, Milton’s parks are increasingly shared with weekend cricket matches. Enthusiasts have formed informal clubs and leagues, where friends and families gather to play.
The growing popularity of cricket reflects a larger national trend. Canada’s men’s national team’s historic debut at the ICC T20 World Cup this year has inspired communities like Milton to embrace the game even more. Combined with record-breaking viewership and new sponsorship deals for Cricket Canada, the momentum for cricket in the country is undeniable.
Milton’s growing love for cricket is more than just a sport; it’s a celebration of culture, community, and the power of sport to unite. With grassroots enthusiasm and increasing support, Milton is poised to become one of Canada’s key cricketing hubs—offering hope to future generations who dream of playing on the global stage.
