WELLINGTON NORTH – Council approved a 500 feet airspace limit in order for the Canadian Forces Snowbirds to do a flyby during Arthur’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
At Monday’s council meeting, Coun. Steve McCabe informed council that the Arthur Optimists and the township’s economic development office are asking the Canadian Forces Snowbirds to do a flyby for Arthur’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
“The Arthur Optimists have been working on this and have gotten in touch with me to make it happen. They’re trying to get the Canadian Forces Snowbirds to get a flyby in Arthur. But they’re not allowed on July 1st, which means we might have to do it on July 2nd and we’re hoping to get two CFA fighter jets to do the flyover,” said McCabe.
“Snowbirds are also requiring the municipal council to approve an airspace lower than 500 feet to do a flyover and we have to put it in a letter and send it off to them. After that, they’ll go through their own approval process and scheduling and we should be able to get them.”
Council approved the requirement, while simultaneously declaring the 150th anniversary celebrations in 2022 as municipally significant and a recognized community festival.
Dale Small, township’s economic development officer, explained to council that the planning is at its earliest stages.
The Arthur BIA, Arthur Chamber and Wellington North Cultural Roundtable are in the process of establishing the planning committee. They have contacted all the local service groups and community organizations, and plan to have a virtual meeting later this month to finalize the committee.
