Canada Expands Access to Emergency Response Benefit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced more Canadians would get access to the Canada Emergency Response Benefit.  He made the statement as part of his morning briefing.

Eligibility rules are changed to the following:

  • Allow people to earn up to $1,000 per month while collecting the CERB.
  • Extend the CERB to seasonal workers who have exhausted their EI regular benefits and are unable to undertake their usual seasonal work as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • Extend the CERB to workers who recently exhausted their EI regular benefits and are unable to find a job or return to work because of COVID-19.

This is an extremely difficult time for all Canadians, and we need to make sure that essential workers have the support they need so they can continue to do the critical work we all rely on,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau also announced his government would top up the salaries of essential workers would be topped up by as much as $2500/ month.  The money would come from transfers to the provinces and territories.  “The measures we are introducing today will ensure that they are properly compensated for their efforts and ensure that workers who have lost income as a result of the pandemic get the help they need through the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), Finance Minister Bill Morneau said.  To apply for the CERB click here
