CORRECTION: Changed Georgetown walk event location to St. George’s Anglican Church, not Norval United Church.
Residents in Georgetown and Acton are invited to brave the winter chill to support those experiencing hunger, homelessness and hardship.
The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk on Feb. 28 will feature two- and five-kilometre walking routes, with rest stops offering refreshments along the route.
Those who raise more than $150, or $75 for youth participants, will receive a signature CNOY tuque.
The Acton walk aims to raise $40,000 this year, with proceeds from the event going towards the Roxy Centre.
The Roxy Centre, in downtown Acton, supports families through various programs, including community dinners and lunches, a food pantry program, free coffee connection and other community services.
The centre at 6 Mill St. E. will serve as the start and finish line.
In Georgetown, the community will be rallying behind Links2Care and the Georgetown Bread Basket with a fundraising goal of $64,000.
The Georgetown event will begin and end at St. George’s Anglican Church (60 Guelph St.).
Both walks will follow the same schedule on the event day:
4 p.m. check-in opens
4:45 p.m. opening remarks
5 p.m. sendoff (the walk begins)
6 p.m. light meal served for participants
7 p.m. closing remarks
Organizers recommend participants wear waterproof shoes or boots as well as a warm coat with mittens or gloves.
People can also bring extra snacks if they have allergies or food sensitivities and are encouraged to bring a water bottle.
Registration is open online for the Acton and Georgetown events, where residents can register as an individual or as a team, submit a donation and find more information.
