Crime surge in Halton: theft, assault, and fatal collision among recent incidents

The Halton Regional Police Service is investigating a series of alarming incidents, including a Burlington shoplifting that turned violent, sexual assault charges at a Milton holistic center, a fatal car crash on Guelph Line, an armed carjacking, and a violent home invasion in Oakville. These events, ranging from theft and weapons offences to a tragic collision and assault, have prompted police to seek public assistance and continue investigations across the region.

MAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT AND WEAPONS OFFENCES

A man was arrested after a shoplifting incident at Fortinos on Appleby Line escalated into a violent altercation. Omar Abugalib, 24, of Hamilton, fled after stealing groceries and collided with another vehicle in the parking lot. When employees tried to stop him, he brandished a knife. Loss prevention officers and bystanders subdued Abugalib. He faces multiple charges, including theft under $5000, assault with a weapon, and dangerous operation of a vehicle. Two employees and a bystander sustained minor injuries.

HOLISTIC CENTRE OWNER ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

Ehsan Ansari, 58, the operator of Holistic Hijama in Milton, has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault. Police were alerted after an adult female reported being assaulted during a visit to the centre. Investigators believe there may be additional victims, as Ansari has also worked in Mississauga. He is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

FATAL COLLISION ON GUELPH LINE IN BURLINGTON

A 47-year-old Hamilton man has died following a fatal single-vehicle collision on Guelph Line. The driver lost control of his silver Mitsubishi sedan, which slid off the roadway and struck a retaining wall. The driver was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A 41-year-old female passenger and a small dog were pronounced dead at the scene. The Halton Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating.

ARMED CARJACKING UNDER INVESTIGATION

Police are investigating an armed carjacking in the area of North Shore Boulevard East. A suspect described as a white male approximately 5’9″ tall, ambushed the victim after they exited their vehicle. The suspect, armed with a handgun, demanded the keys to a 2021 BMW and fled in the car. The victim was unharmed.

HOME INVASION IN OAKVILLE ENDS IN STOLEN SUV

Two masked suspects broke into a home on Heritage Way, attacked a male resident with a hammer, and stole a Mercedes SUV. The suspects entered by breaking the front door’s glass and confronted the resident, demanding the keys. The victim sustained minor injuries. Police are seeking video footage from the area as they continue their investigation.
