The Eden Mills Writers’ Festival has officially released its full schedule of workshops, panel discussions and literary events for its 37th annual celebration, running this September. The festival, known for its vibrant programming and open-air setting along the Eramosa River, will culminate in a street festival on Sunday, Sept. 7.
Artistic Director Kali Pearson shared her reflections on this year’s lineup, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in today’s world. “If we live by the headlines, it’s hard to be hopeful,” said Pearson.
“But if we’re willing to pause, think deeply and laugh freely, we can shed light on the dark places and celebrate the wonders that surround us.”
Pearson, a journalist and longtime literary advocate, worked closely with the festival board, Executive Director, community readers and independent booksellers to curate a diverse and dynamic program. Special thanks were extended to Stephanie Minett of The Bookshelf in Guelph, as well as Another Story Bookshop, The Dragon and Hopeless Romantic for their recommendations.
This year’s festival returns to its community roots, with input from local readers shaping the author lineup. The programming spans genres including literary fiction, mystery, romance, speculative fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Topics such as sustainability, artificial intelligence and the future of democracy will be explored through both factual and fictional lenses.
Children’s programming will also be featured, offering creative play spaces and activities for young readers and their families.
Pearson’s passion for storytelling is evident in her career, which includes work with Chatelaine, CBC, TVO, The Toronto Star and the BBC. “Books have always been a sacred space for me,” she said.
“Connecting people through stories is my life’s work.”
The festival also features a four-part creativity series by author Sarah Selecky. Her latest tip, “Practice Imaginative Productivity,” encourages writers to shift their mindset into receptivity through sensory awareness and curiosity. Selecky’s newsletter offers further insights into writing as contemplative practice.
