Elsie MacGill Secondary School at 1410 Bronte St is hosting a grand opening Thursday May 26 2022.
The school opened in September 2021 with students and staff temporarily located at the former EC Drury High School site. The new Bronte Street South building opened to students and staff in February once construction was complete.
“Elsie MacGill SS has been founded on the notion of ‘doing things differently’ and that student voice and choice would be central to how we operate,” says Mark Duley, Principal at Elsie MacGill SS. “We are inviting local dignitaries and our community at large to tour the school and interact with our students as they showcase what we have been learning this year.”
The day’s activities will include students leading school tours for dignitaries, invited guests visiting displays of student learning, a community open house starting at 5 p.m., student displays in the school cafeteria, and more.
The three-story accessible school features 21st century teaching layouts, air conditioning with individual classroom controls, triple gym, bus lay-by and student drop-off area. It also has a Community Pathways Program hub, which accommodates four classrooms with a common kitchen area and sensory rooms. The school will also offer the HDSB’s I-STEM Program in Fall 2022.
Elsie MacGill, a pioneering aeronautical engineer, held numerous leadership roles in business and was a member of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada (1967-70). MacGill is a recipient of the Order of Canada.
