Enbridge Gas is warning customers across Ontario to be on alert for a series of scams aimed at stealing personal information and money.
The company says fraudsters are using letters, emails, text messages and door-to-door visits to impersonate Enbridge representatives. One recent scam involves fake letters left at homes claiming that Enbridge will be conducting a gas meter and pipeline inspection.
The letter contains a phone number not operated by Enbridge. Those who call the number are then sent a text message requesting further personal information, which the company says is used for fraudulent purposes.
“We are advising customers not to click on these ads, respond to these emails or communicate with any company other than Enbridge Gas,” the company said in a statement. “Scammers are sophisticated and use many schemes to trick you into providing your personal information. They pretend to be Enbridge Gas by using our branded logos, creating fake websites and phone numbers, or claiming to be affiliated with us when they aren’t.”
Enbridge says customers in several Ontario communities have reported being targeted and warns that other areas may also be at risk.
The utility is urging residents to verify any suspicious communication and contact Enbridge directly with questions about service or safety.
Reported scams include:
Fake inspection letters with fraudulent contact numbers
Phone calls demanding personal information or payment
Impersonated websites offering to pay gas bills at a discount
Social media ads promoting fake rebates, free thermostats or heat pumps
Emails requesting banking or account details
Enbridge says it does not offer discounts on gas bills, accept credit card payments by phone, or ask for personal details in legitimate communications.
Customers are urged to:
Hang up and call 1-877-362-7434 if they receive suspicious calls
Avoid clicking links in texts or emails
Verify ID of anyone claiming to represent Enbridge at the door
Use only the official website: enbridgegas.com
Anyone who suspects a scam should report it to Enbridge Gas, local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
