The Food Kids foundation is an organization dedicated to providing healthy food to elementary school students in low-income families throughout the Halton area. They recently posted the following photo on their Facebook Page: The organization found themselves with empty shelves. The photo had the following caption: “Food4Kids Halton shelves are looking a bit empty. Want to help us stock them for back to school? Why not hold a food drive with friends and/or work.”
Their most needed items are:
- Oatmeal (individual portions)
- Apple Sauce & Fruit Cups
- Tuna & Salmon Cans
- Tuna or chicken packs/ crackers
- Granola Bars (nut free)
- Raisins/Craisins (individual boxes)
Food Drives aren’t the only way to help. They take donations through their website as well. “We can turn each dollar into $2 with the connections we have with the wholesalers, and grocery stores,” Community Relations Manager Gayle Kabash said. The items are placed in the students’ backpacks.
They run a wide variety of programs throughout the school year including: Weekends Without Hunger supplying kids with food through the weekend. This past summer they ran a summer feed program, which, helped 111 families, or 260 children. For more information including a list of schools, visit their website. If you are interested in hosting a food drive, contact Kabash at: gayle@food4kids.ca
