Guelph Man Charged a second time in Anti-Asian Incident

By: Laura Steiner

A Guelph man was arrested for spitting at an Asian couple.  The 21-year old is charged with assault and criminal harassment in connection with an incident earlier this week.

The incident took place at approximately 10:45 a.m. Tuesday morning as a couple walked in a south-end park, and the suspect followed close behind.  The couple who knew the suspect,  changed direction in an attempt to avoid the man, but he ran in front of them, and confronted him.

The suspect ranted, and spit towards the couple, but did not hit them.  He later told Guelph Police that he was upset at Asian people because they brought the COVID-19 virus to Canada.

This is the second incident for the 21-year old.  He’s already facing charges of criminal harassment and causing a disturbance in connection with an incident March 28.  He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
