The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is pleased to announce that Deputy Chief Nish Duraiappah has been named Chief of Police of the Peel Regional Police. The HRPS is grateful for Deputy Duraiappah’s service and leadership. His day-to-day approach and the many initiatives that have flourished under his leadership have had such a positive and valued impact on our members, as well as the community he has served for more than 24 years.
Oakville Mayor Rob Burton serves as Chairman of the HRPS Board applauds Duraippah’s leadership. “Deputy Chief Nish Duraiappah has been a valuable member of the team responsible for our success here in Halton. He has also been a key leader in public safety throughout Ontario and Canada,” Burton said.
The Region of Halton has recently been named the safest large municipality according to the Crime Severity Index for the second year in a row. Chief Stephen Tanner credit’s Duraiappah as part the team that helped deliver the achievement. “Nish has played an instrumental role in building the strong senior leadership team we have within the HRPS. That team will continue to meet and exceed our goals to continue to be the safest municipality in all of Canada as we serve the citizens of Halton,” Tanner said.
Peel Regional Police Services Board had been conducting a search following the retirement of former Chief Jennifer Evans. Duraiappah becomes only the second police chief to be hired externally in Peel Region’s history.
