The Town of Halton Hills is moving forward with a new addition to its trail network that will come at no cost to the municipality.

At the Feb. 17 council meeting, town council approved the funding and creation of the Canvas Hill trail project, which will serve as the entrance to the larger Glen West Trail system, located at 102 Confederation St. in Glen Williams.

According to a report submitted to council, the project carries a total budget of $57,585.93 that will be funded entirely by the developer Glen Williams Estates Inc.

The report noted the funding is the result of the Ontario Land Tribunal settlement process regarding the 31-lot subdivision where “the developer agreed to make a cash payment to contribute to the cost of a portion of the Glen West trail.”

The total funding contains $40,000 from the settlement reached through the OLT and $17,585.93 as additional funds negotiated by the town to cover extra trail segments identified during the subdivision review process.

Coun. Matt Kindbom said that establishing connected trails in Glen Williams is a “core part of what makes Halton Hills special.”

He added that residents in Glen Williams “have been advocating for these trails for a long time and it makes the results more grounded.”

Plans are in place for the trail to eventually connect to the existing Meagan Drive and McMaster Street neighbourhood, though subsequent phases will require future budget approvals.

Town staff noted that the trail is intended to be completed in co-ordination with resident occupancy of the new subdivision.

With council’s approval, detailed design and construction are slated to take place over the next two years.
