Halton Hills library hosting eBird workshop ahead of Great Backyard Bird Count

Both seasoned and casual bird observers in Halton Hills can turn their hobby into meaningful data for science.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, the Georgetown branch (9 Church St.) of the Halton Hills Public Library will be hosting an eBird 101 workshop designed to help bird enthusiasts of all skill levels master the worldwide bird-tracking platform.

Developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, every sighting recorded on the platform helps scientists track bird populations, migration patterns and habitat health across the world.

The workshop, which runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m., aims to be interactive and accessible. A lecture-style presentation will cover the eBird app and website.

After the presentation, participants will put their identification skills to the test with a lively game of Birding Bingo.

Library staff will be available to provide one-on-one support for individuals who want to sign up for an eBird account at the event.

Space at the workshop is limited. Participants can register online to secure a spot.

The workshop gives residents the opportunity to prepare their eBird accounts for the Great Backyard Bird Count, which takes place from Feb. 13 to Feb. 16.

The four-day event encourages bird enthusiasts to share bird sightings through eBird to help scientists better understand and protect birds around the world.

Starting Jan. 30, residents can drop in, between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at either Georgetown or Acton branch (17 River St.) and pick up a free Backyard Bird Count kit to learn how to count and report the birds spotted in the community.

For residents using eBird, local sightings submitted through the platform will be counted toward the bird count event.
