With the start of the school year just weeks away, the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) is bracing for an influx of requests to support students within the Halton District School Board (HDSB) by providing them with essential supplies and clothing.
“Every parent wants to send their kids back to school with the right classroom supplies and new clothes and shoes, but that is simply out of reach for many Halton families,” said Marc Clare, HLF’s CEO.
HLF recognizes the challenges many families face, as Clare noted, “We know of kids who come to class without breakfast or lunch, are wearing their parents’ clothing, or who have broken prescription glasses. We would like every child to start the school year with the resources they need to focus on learning and to be included with their peers.”
The impact of HLF’s efforts is evident, as one school secretary shared, “This single dad had requested help to purchase groceries for his four girls. Two hours after receiving the gift cards, he sent the school a photo of a grocery cart filled with food. HLF makes a difference!”
To meet the rising demand, HLF is launching its annual 2024 back-to-school fundraising campaign to provide school necessities for at least 300 HDSB students by September 30.
Throughout the year, HLF works to eliminate financial barriers to learning by providing grocery cards and other essentials, enabling families to meet their children’s needs.
In 2023-2024, HLF responded to nearly 2,900 requests for assistance from school staff—a 45% increase from the previous year. This year, HLF is excited to partner again with belairdirect, which will match monthly donations up to a total of $15,000.
HLF is calling on members of the Halton business community to become Back to School Champions by supporting the campaign. Businesses can contribute by making donations, organizing fundraisers, or promoting the campaign through their platforms.
