Since its launch on June 1, 2023, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) Firearms and Weapons Amnesty program has provided a vital avenue for individuals and businesses residing or operating in the region of Halton to relinquish unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, and ammunition without fear of facing criminal charges.
Responsible residents and business owners in Halton have demonstrated their commitment to public safety by voluntarily surrendering many firearms, ammunition, and weapons. The current tally includes:
42 Rifles
38 Shotguns
7 Imitation firearms
19 Pellet guns
12 Pellet rifles
6 Prohibited handguns
1 Prohibited rifle
9 Restricted handguns
568 pounds of ammunition
22 Magazines
54 Knives, swords, and arrows
8 Prohibited weapons (switchblades, butterfly knives, Tasers, brass knuckles, etc.)
The HRPS amnesty initiative is an ongoing effort with no predetermined end date. Residents and business owners are strongly encouraged to use this opportunity to surrender any unwanted or unlawfully owned firearms, ammunition, and weapons.
Notably, the amnesty extends beyond traditional firearms to encompass any weapon that could threaten public safety. This category includes imitation firearms, air guns, switchblades, butterfly knives, pepper spray, nunchakus (nunchucks), shurikens (throwing stars), push daggers, knife combs, crossbows, spiked wristbands, batons, blowguns, and more.
It’s essential to clarify that this amnesty program is distinct from any government buyback initiative.
Individuals interested in participating in this program can visit the HRPS website at www.haltonpolice.ca/amnesty to complete an online appointment request form. Appointments for surrendering firearms, weapons, and ammunition have been available since June 1, ensuring a convenient and confidential process for all participants.
