In celebration of International Youth Day, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has launched its first-ever Youth Engagement Strategy, a three-year roadmap to guide youth-related initiatives across the region from 2025 to 2027.

Observed annually on Aug. 12, International Youth Day highlights the importance of empowering young people and promoting their active participation in society. HRPS’s new strategy aligns with this global mission by focusing on inclusive engagement, skill-building and community collaboration.

Developed in collaboration with HRPS members, the Service’s Youth Advisory Council, and 49 community partners, the strategy reflects input from sectors including education, healthcare, youth justice, child welfare, and newcomer services. It aims to strengthen relationships with youth and ensure their voices are central to future programming.

HRPS members working directly with youth will continue to prioritize inclusive engagement, delivering high-quality programs that build transferable life skills. A newly designed Community Resource Map will also help connect youth to local organizations offering additional support.

“Given that Halton is one of the fastest growing regions in Canada, it’s important that we unite as a community to ensure no young person gets left behind,” said Chief Stephen Tanner.

“By consulting a range of community organizations and those they serve, we can better understand what young people need to live productive and meaningful lives. We’re fortunate to work alongside our partners to help improve the lives and futures of all young people across Halton.”

Angelica Tam, president of the HRPS Youth Advisory Council, emphasized the importance of trust and collaboration.

“The relationship between police and youth builds a foundation of respect, transparency and communication,” she said. “Only through mutual trust can we foster understanding and address issues together.”

The strategy will be evaluated through a public end-of-term report to measure its progress and effectiveness. To read the full 2025–2027 Youth Engagement Strategy, visit the HRPS website.
