Halton Region Public Health has declared a cold warning effective from Wednesday, January 17, 2024, until temperatures rise above -15 degrees Celsius (without wind-chill) or weather conditions improve, mitigating the risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme cold.
The advisory underscores the potential dangers of exposure to cold weather, which can significantly increase the risk of cold-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia, leading to severe health consequences.
Extreme cold weather conditions can affect anyone, with susceptibility dependent on factors like the duration of exposure to the cold and the level of physical exertion. Higher-risk groups identified by health authorities include older adults (aged 65 and above), infants, young children, outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts engaging in activities like hiking or skiing, homeless individuals, and those lacking adequate shelter, clothing, or food.
Residents are urged to take precautionary measures and adhere to safety guidelines during extreme cold. Monitoring weather updates, limiting outdoor exposure, and ensuring appropriate clothing are essential to safeguard against the potential health hazards of current weather conditions.
