Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) Chief Stephen Tanner has released a statement on his travel to Florida for what he calls personal business matters.
“What weighs on me the most is the fact I am not there to support my 1,000 members as we grieve the loss of one of our own. I have extended my deepest apologies to every member of the Service,” Tanner said in a statement published on Twitter. Detective Constable Mike Tidball died following a sudden medical episode this past Wednesday.
Media reports indicate that Police Services Board Chair Rob Burton knew of the travel beforehand. “Chief Tanner continues to have my full confidence,” he said in a statement. Tanner returns to the country this weekend, “and will be complying with the requirements to quarantine upon my arrival,” according to his statement. Anyone returning to Canada will have to quarantine for 14 days.
Ontario has been under a 28 day province-wide lockdown since December 26. The federal government has been advising Canadians against non-essential travel since March, 2020. The Canada- US border remains closed until January 21. Halton Region recorded an increase of 95 cases of COVID-19, and two deaths.
