Milton Fire & Rescue Services is reminding residents that updated carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements under the Ontario Fire Code will take effect Jan. 1, 2026, aimed at improving early detection of the deadly gas in homes.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can be fatal. Properly installed and regularly tested CO alarms provide early warning and can help save lives, fire officials said.

The new requirements apply to a range of homes, including detached or semi-detached houses, townhouses, and cottages that contain any of the following: a fuel-burning appliance such as a furnace, water heater, gas stove, or wood stove; a fireplace; an attached garage; or heated air supplied by a fuel-burning appliance located outside the home, including outdoor wood furnaces or boilers, pellet stoves in detached buildings, propane or natural gas furnaces in outbuildings, and external boiler systems connected to home heating.

Under the Ontario Fire Code, CO alarms must be installed near every sleeping area and on every storey of a home, including levels without bedrooms.

Additional requirements apply to owners, landlords, and operators of multi-unit residential buildings, such as apartment buildings, and care occupancy buildings, including group homes and care facilities.
