The community of Milton came together on Remembrance Day to honor the sacrifices of Canadian veterans, with two key events held on November 11, 2024: the Park Remembrance Day Parade and the Milton Evergreen Remembrance Day Parade. The day of reflection culminated in a luncheon and guest speaker presentation at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136.

Despite heavy rain, residents, local organizations, and veterans gathered to commemorate the occasion, displaying the deep gratitude and respect Milton holds for its military history.

The Remembrance Day ceremonies began with a solemn parade through Milton’s parks and local streets, led by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, veterans, and local service groups. The crowd, though smaller than usual due to the inclement weather, showed their steadfast support by turning out in raincoats and umbrellas to pay tribute.

“It’s so important to me that we take a moment each year to remember the sacrifices our veterans made for our freedom,” said Sarah Johnson, a longtime Milton resident who attended the event with her family. “Even on a rainy day, it’s about honouring their service.”

Following the parades, veterans, their families, and local community members gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136 for a luncheon.

The public relations officer of Milton’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136 says it’s always moving to see the community gather in remembrance.

“It’s always humbling to see the community come together like this,” said Jen Willette. “It’s about more than just today — it’s about remembering and passing the message on to future generations.”

The luncheon was followed by a moving guest speaker presentation, which featured insights on the importance of Remembrance and the significance of supporting veterans.

In addition to the parades and luncheon, several other local organizations contributed to making the day meaningful, including the Milton Menace Hockey Team, which not only provided meals but also assisted in coordinating the event.

The president of Milton’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136 has expressed gratitude to the community for its strong turnout at this year’s Remembrance Day services despite the rainy weather.

“It was truly inspiring to see so many members of our community gathered at our cenotaphs, paying tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom,” Sarah Moore said in a statement.

The ceremonies may have been challenged by the weather, but the spirit of remembrance and gratitude was unmistakably clear. Local veterans and their families expressed thanks for the ongoing support shown by the town of Milton.

Moore emphasized the importance of Remembrance Day as a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, both past and present.

“Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion that reminds us all of the incredible sacrifices made by those who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and unity as we honour their memory and their unwavering commitment to ensuring we live in a free and peaceful country,” she said.

Moore thanked the community for its participation, noting that the turnout demonstrated the strength and spirit of Milton residents.

“Lest we forget,” Moore said.
