By Laura Steiner, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, The Milton Reporter

The Town of Milton remains steadfast in laying the groundwork for planned growth across the community, emphasizing the development and upkeep of top-tier infrastructure. Milton’s dedication to constructing infrastructure that aligns with the evolving needs of its residents as it prepares for a future featuring higher-density, mixed-use neighbourhoods is unwavering.

In a recent update provided in the Town’s annual performance report to the Council for the year 2022, several significant infrastructure investments were highlighted, including:

The addition of over 20 kilometres of storm sewer lines and 390 storm sewers.

Six kilometres of pedestrian walking trails and nearly 10 kilometres of bike trails were installed.

Expansion of the Town’s municipal road network by eight kilometers.

Issuance of 1,531 new residential and industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) building permits, marking a substantial 36 percent increase from the 1,124 permits issued in the      2021 fiscal year.

Anticipating continued growth, the Town envisions numerous opportunities, such as the introduction of postsecondary education, diverse housing options, improved transit, and bolstered financial stability for Milton. Rigorous planning for this growth remains a priority, ensuring that any development takes environmental and fiscal considerations into account.

In 2022, the Town initiated an annual reporting practice, sharing a series of Council-endorsed indicators related to municipal service delivery performance. This step underscores the Council’s directive for deliberate and purposeful planning.

Andrew Siltala, Chief Administrative Officer of the Town of Milton, emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making, saying, “Collecting, analyzing, and acting upon data helps Town staff focus on advancing our collective vision for Milton 2051. Milton will continue to grow, and we want to be sure that we are putting the right uses in the right locations.”
