Milton Public Library (MPL) will celebrate its 170th anniversary in 2025, marking its journey from a small rural institution to a dynamic community hub. Founded in 1855 as the Mechanics Institute and Library Association, MPL has evolved into a cornerstone of Milton’s cultural and educational landscape. Its three branches offer diverse resources and programs.

Reflecting on the milestone, Sarah Douglas-Murray, CEO and Chief Librarian of MPL, said, “This anniversary is not just a celebration of the past 170 years, but also of the library’s unwavering role in shaping the lives of our community members. For generations, MPL has been a space where people come to learn, grow, and connect. As we look back on our history, we are also excited to look forward and continue building a bright future for the library and the Milton community.”

The library will officially launch the celebrations on Jan. 25, 2025, at the Main Branch of MPL. The event will include opening remarks by Douglas-Murray and Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz, followed by a ceremonial cake-cutting and activities for families. Visitors can also explore displays highlighting MPL’s rich history and ongoing contributions to literacy, lifelong learning, and community building.

As part of the festivities, MPL is inviting residents to share how the library has impacted their lives. Community members can submit short quotes or video clips by Jan. 20, 2025, for a chance to be featured in the library’s year-long campaign and win a $25 Indigo Gift Card.

“MPL provides essential services like access to technology, newcomer programs, and collaborative spaces. We adapt to Milton’s rapid growth by expanding digital collections, diverse programming, and resources that support learning, creativity, and connection,” said Chris Dorscht, Director of Customer Experience at MPL.

Dorscht highlighted the library’s transformation over the years: “Milton Public Library has grown from a small rural library to a dynamic community hub with three branches. We’ve adapted to changes by expanding from physical collections to digital resources, offering technology access, and providing programs that foster lifelong learning and connection for a growing, diverse population.”

Throughout 2025, MPL will host a variety of events and initiatives to honor its legacy and look toward the future. These include author talks, historical exhibits, and the “Bee Inspired Stories” campaign, which will spotlight meaningful moments from patrons, staff, and the wider community.

Taling about MPL’s role in addressing the needs of one of the fastest-growing municipalities in North America, Chris Dorscht said, “MPL provides essential services like access to technology, newcomer programs, and collaborative spaces. We adapt to Milton’s rapid growth by expanding digital collections, diverse programming, and resources that support learning, creativity, and connection.”

“We honour our history through storytelling and archival projects while innovating with new technologies, expanded digital collections, and reimagined spaces. This balance ensures MPL remains relevant and impactful for future generations,” he concluded.
