Milton Public Library (MPL) announced that, beginning Jan. 2, 2026, overdue fines on children’s and teen books and audio-visual materials will be eliminated. All existing overdue fines on these materials will also be cleared, giving families a fresh start and improved access to library resources.
The change applies only to children’s and teen books and audio-visual materials such as DVDs. MPL emphasized that replacement costs, processing fees for lost items, and fees for non-pickup of holds will still apply. Overdue fees on adult materials, video games, and Library of Things items will continue. Patrons are encouraged to settle any existing charges other than overdue fines, including fees for lost or damaged items, before January 2026.
Patrons can review their accounts and outstanding fees by visiting MPL’s website at www.beinspired.ca, using the “Chat with a Librarian” feature, calling 905-875-2665, or visiting any of the library’s three branches during operating hours.
“This initiative reinforces MPL’s commitment to literacy, equity, and reducing barriers to access,” said Sarah Douglas-Murray, CEO and chief librarian. “We want young readers and their families to borrow freely, read widely, and engage with the library without worrying about overdue fines.”
Local parents welcomed the change, saying it will encourage children to read more and make library visits more enjoyable. Harman Singh said, “This is a huge relief for families like ours. Sometimes kids forget to return books on time, and fines can really add up. Now they can explore new books, discover new stories, and enjoy their library experience without the stress of overdue charges. It makes learning fun again and gives families one less worry during busy weeks.”
Joe Sugnato added, “Clearing overdue fines and starting fresh is a wonderful step. It shows that the library cares about children and their families, and it really motivates kids to pick up more books and get excited about reading. We love that our kids can come in, choose what interests them, and know that mistakes in returning items won’t stop them from accessing the library. This will make a big difference in encouraging reading habits and building a lifelong love for learning.”
MPL thanked the community, Library Board, and the Town of Milton for their support in building a more accessible and inclusive library.
Serving one of the fastest-growing municipalities in North America, Milton Public Library operates three physical branches — Main, Beaty, and Sherwood — and provides online services through www.beinspired.ca. The library describes its mission as empowering the community to “Read. Learn. Innovate. Connect.” MPL is active on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, and Bluesky.
