Milton Witnesses Sharp Decline in False Alarm Calls in 2022

In a substantial achievement, 2022 saw a remarkable reduction in false alarm calls to the Milton Fire and Rescue Services, thanks to public awareness campaigns, by-law adjustments, and improved operational practices.

This development holds substantial significance as it not only frees up essential emergency response resources but also enhances the Town’s ability to strategize for the future. These findings were unveiled in the Town of Milton’s annual performance report for the year 2022, presented to the Council on October 23, 2023.

Before 2022, false alarm calls were consistently on the rise, constituting 30 percent of all service calls in 2020 and a staggering 42 percent in 2021. However, 2022 marked a significant turnaround, with false alarms plummeting to 9 percent.

While false alarm calls declined as a proportion of all service requests, Milton Fire and Rescue Services did handle approximately 400 more total service calls in 2022 compared to the preceding year, receiving a total of 2,377 service calls throughout the year.

In 2022, the Town initiated an annual reporting system focusing on various Council-endorsed indicators of municipal service delivery performance. This data-driven approach not only aids staff but also helps the Council to maintain its focus on advancing the Town’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan.

Chief Administrative Officer of the Town of Milton, Andrew Siltala, commented on the positive trend, saying, “It is important to monitor and report on our progress so that we stay focused on achieving our long-term vision. It’s encouraging to know that Milton Fire and Rescue Services rises to the challenge and keeps Milton safe for residents.”
