Oakville launches enhanced online services for building permits

The Town of Oakville has introduced a streamlined online service to simplify the building permit process, aiming to enhance efficiency and support local growth. The new system consolidates application intake, review, and approval into a single, user-friendly platform, making it easier for homeowners, builders, and contractors to navigate the permitting process.

The move aligns with Oakville’s commitment to the Government of Ontario’s target of building 33,000 new homes by 2031. Improving the permit process is a key component of the town’s Housing Strategy and Action Plan, approved by council in December 2024, which focuses on timely and efficient housing delivery.

“Oakville is streamlining the building permit process to accelerate approvals, helping developers and homeowners move forward with their plans faster,” said Mayor Rob Burton.

“Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures a more efficient and user-friendly experience for all applicants.”

The enhanced service, accessible through the town’s Online Services page under the Planning and Building section, connects applicants and town staff on a centralized platform, enabling smoother communication and collaboration throughout the process.

Builders and contractors can expect quicker reviews and approvals, while homeowners undertaking renovations will benefit from real-time tracking of their applications, including updates on reviews and inspections.

The platform, often referred to as ePlan in the building and development industry, represents a significant step forward for Oakville’s digital transformation in municipal services.

The improved service builds on the success of a similar initiative piloted in June 2024 for municipal sign permit applications. That project reduced processing times for sign permits from an average of 45 days to just 15 days, issuing 101 sign permits during the pilot period. The town plans to extend this streamlined approach to planning and development applications later this year.

“This new system is a game-changer for both homeowners and industry professionals,” said Jassi Singh, a local contractor.

“It removes a lot of the guesswork and back-and-forth, making the process much faster and more transparent.”

In 2024, Oakville issued 3,062 building permits with a total construction value of $2.1 billion, a sharp increase from 2,418 permits worth $1.7 billion in 2023. Additionally, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported 3,580 new housing starts in Oakville last year, reflecting the town’s rapid growth.

With the new platform, Oakville hopes to sustain this momentum by facilitating faster approvals for residential, commercial, and industrial projects, thereby supporting the community’s housing and development needs.

“The enhancements aren’t just about speed; they’re about making the process more accessible and predictable for everyone,” said Singh, who recently applied for a building permit on behalf of a client.

“The real-time updates and user-friendly interface make a big difference.”

Oakville’s commitment to improving municipal services goes beyond building permits. The town is also exploring ways to streamline planning and development applications, with updates expected later this year.

Oakville’s approach reflects its dedication to fostering a vibrant and well-planned community, with the new online system poised to make a lasting impact on how residents and businesses interact with the town.
