Mayor Gord Krantz was joined by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins, and Halton M.P.P. Indira Naidoo-Harris to cut a ribbon on the expanded facility.
The facility has added 330,000 sq. ft. including an expanded Emergency Room (E.R.), Maternal-newborn unit, and 4 operating rooms. “There is no greater comfort than knowing that you, and your loved ones can get the medical you need, when you need it,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said. The province of Ontario provided an approximate $485 million grant towards it.
Ground was broken on the expansion in 2015. The project was completed with a “topping off” ceremony in June, 2016. “It is much more than a celebration of bricks and mortar. This is about people in our community, having access to high-quality, modern healthcare when they are sick and in need,” Naidoo-Harris said.
In his speech, Mayor Krantz recognized the community effort started by the Friends of Milton Hospital. “Madame Premier, they led the charge,” Krantz told the crowd.
The Friends of Milton Hospital was a group of concerned citizens who raised awareness of the need for a hospital expansion. “It was the biggest thing he could have done for those that worked,” Samantha Attew said. Attew was one of the members of Friends of Milton Hospital. What Attew thought would be only a few weeks, lasted 4.5 years. “I’m over the moon with Mayor Krantz recognizing the people that worked so hard.
The new expansion will open Sunday October 1, 2017. Halton Healthcare would like to remind people if they are having baby before 6 a.m. Sunday, they are to use the temporary main entrance of Bronte St. South. After that time, use the Maternal- Newborn entrance off Bronte St. If you require emergency care before 6.a.m go to the current emergency department. After 6 a.m. go to the new Emergency department located off Derry Rd.
