Surge in Syphilis Cases Sparks Health Concerns Across Canada

By Laura Steiner, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, The Milton Reporter

Recent data reveals a startling surge in cases of infectious syphilis across Canada, with rates skyrocketing by 109% in the past four years.

Even more alarming is the staggering 599% increase in cases of congenital syphilis over the same period.

Syphilis, a sexually transmitted bacterial infection, poses significant health risks if left untreated, including severe complications affecting the heart, brain, blood vessels, and nervous system. Moreover, congenital syphilis, transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy, can lead to fetal loss, stillbirth, and profound lifelong health challenges for the newborn.

Compounding the issue is the fact that not all individuals infected with syphilis display noticeable symptoms, potentially allowing the infection to spread silently and unchecked.

Health authorities stress the importance of regular screening for syphilis, particularly for sexually active individuals with multiple partners and expectant mothers. Simple preventive measures such as practicing safer sex with condoms or dental dams can also help mitigate the risk of transmission.
