Finding a job in today’s competitive market is a challenge even for experienced job seekers. And new graduates entering the workforce need to work even harder to stand out.

Tap into the power of social media. Of course you’ll need to make sure your channels are squeaky clean by keeping your image professional and consistent. But using social media can also be an advantage, creating a great starting point for people to learn more about you. On all of your channels make sure to include links to projects you’re working on, your personal website, your blog, and any other commitments that will help paint a picture of the professional you.

Do some volunteer work. Pick a cause that interests you and take on a new volunteer gig. It’s a great way to build up your resume, and there are very few organizations that will turn you down. Many even offer part-time volunteer programs so you can balance work and job applications. You never know who you might meet and what doors could open.

Look at secure industries. Some jobs that will always exist, and they’re not just those related to death and taxes. With a history of being recession-proof—after all, people always need to eat and drink—Ontario’s food and beverage processing sector provides employment to over 125,000 people in the province and contributes more than $4 billion in salaries and wages.

Finding a job is a full-time job. No one ever said it was going to be easy — a job hunt takes hard work and patience. You might need to go through dozens of interviews before the right opportunity presents itself. The time and effort will pay off once you find the right job for you.

Scope out the hidden job market. Don’t limit your options. Look at industries that are actually hiring.
