Trudeau Announces Aid for Indigenous Businesses

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government is giving more money to First Nations’ businesses. Approximately $306 million in new funding will be allocated to small, and medium sized Indigenous businesses.

“Entrepreneurs are at the heart of Canadian communities right across the country, and we’re going to help them bridge to better times,” Trudeau said.  The funding allows for interest free loans, and non-repayable contributions.

The money will be administered through Aboriginal financial institutions.  “We continue to work in close coordination with communities, Indigenous partners, and provinces and territories to ensure necessary support to everyone in Canada,” Indigenous Services Marc Miller said.  The measure are expected to help an estimated 6,000 businesses.

Canada-US Border Remains Closed

Canada’s border with the United States will remain closed for another 30 days.  This is an important decision and one that will keep people on both sides of the border safe,” Trudeau said in his Saturday morning briefing.

The previous agreement restricted all non-essential travel.  It allowed for goods, trade, and the passage of healthcare workers back and forth across the border.  It was supposed to expire Tuesday April 21, at 12pm
