Trudeau Announces Aid for Indigenous People

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced additional aid for Indigenous People. $75 million will be given to the agencies providing services living off the reserve, and in urban centres.

“COVID-19 is having unique impacts on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis across the country. For Indigenous peoples living off reserve in urban centres, or separated from their communities, it can be even more challenging to access the help they need, Trudeau said.

The federal government previously announce $15 million as part of a package announce March 18. Indigenous peoples living in urban centres are experiencing the impacts of COVID-19 in a unique way. That is why we are supporting organizations that play an essential role in their lives and give a helping hand in providing crucial services to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis during this difficult time,” Indigenous Services’ Minister Marc Miller said.

Tam Advises Wearing of Non-medical Masks

Canada’s top public health official Dr. Theresa Tam is advising Canadians to wear non-medical masks. “Where COVID19 activity is occurring, use of non-medical masks or face covering is recommended as an added layer of protection when physical distancing can’t be maintained,” Tam tweeted. She also cautioned Canadians against criticizing those with conditions that don’t allow them to wear masks. “Don’t assume that someone who isn’t wearing a mask, or is wearing something different doesn’t have a reason for it,” she said.

According to media reports both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will be wearing non-medical masks. Outgoing Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has said he would, if it meant Parliament could resume regular in-person sessions.
