Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has announced that, on his recommendation, Her Majesty The Queen was pleased to approve the appointment of Ms. Julie Payette as the next Governor General of Canada.
“Julie Payette has dedicated her life to discovery & dreaming big- I know she’ll be an excellent Governor General,” Trudeau tweeted. Payette retired as an astronaut in 2013 after a 20 year career with NASA where she flew two missions in space.
Payette speaks six languages, and has a commercial pilot’s license. She has been active developing policy as a scholar with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for scholars in Washington.
Payette will serve in succession to His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston. The installation ceremony for Ms. Payette will take place in the fall. The installation ceremony will take place in the fall. Trudeau recently met with The Queen while in Scotland.
