The Halton Police have apprehended two individuals after an extensive inquiry into the tragic passing of a child.
On the evening of December 21, 2022, authorities responded to a distress call reporting an unresponsive child at a residence in Burlington. Regrettably, upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of a 12-year-old boy.
Promptly initiating an investigation, the HRPS Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) delved into the circumstances surrounding the incident. After meticulous scrutiny, on February 29, 2024, authorities took into custody the prospective adoptive parents of the deceased child.
Identified as Becky Hamber (44) from Burlington and Brandy Cooney (42) from Hamilton, both suspects face charges of First Degree Murder and Failure to Provide the Necessaries of Life.
Following their arrest, both individuals underwent a bail hearing on March 1. Notably, both accused were also prospective adoptive parents to a younger sibling of the deceased, who resided in the household during the events of December 2022.
In a separate but related development, in January 2023, both accused were previously charged with assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, failure to provide the necessities of life, and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, stemming from an investigation involving the younger sibling.
