Following a 2016 sexual assault case in Burlington, 42-year-old Vezio Cardullo has been deemed a dangerous offender.
In a disturbing incident on September 18, 2016, at around 8:30 pm near the waterfront of Spencer Smith Park, an adult female fell victim to a vicious attack by a stranger. Promptly reporting the incident to authorities, the victim’s bravery led to the swift arrest of Vezio Cardullo, who was apprehended near the park.
On February 12, 2021, Cardullo pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault causing bodily harm, overcoming resistance by choking and uttering threats. Subsequently, a rigorous application process for dangerous offender status commenced, culminating in the final decision on Friday, January 26, 2024, determining Cardullo’s classification as a dangerous offender.
The designation of a dangerous offender is reserved for Canada’s most violent criminals and sexual predators, indicating a high risk of committing future violent or sexual offences. Justice Conlan sentenced Cardullo to 17 years of imprisonment, followed by a 10-year supervision order.
Authorities from the Halton Police express hope that this outcome will provide a degree of solace and healing for the victim involved in this traumatic ordeal.
