Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is condemning American demands made on the auto industry at the NAFTA negotiating table. The U.S. is asking to set specific thresholds on the content in North America built vehicles.
The proposed changes would see thresholds set at 50 percent level for US content in cars, and 85% for North American content. “The U.S. proposal for a 50 per cent U.S. content requirement and an 80 per cent North American content requirement for autos has been unanimously condemned by industry, workers, economic experts and both the Canadian, and Mexican governments,” Wynne said in a statement.
CBC reports say Canadian officials consider the proposals to be a non-starter. Industry experts consider these to be a “poison pill.” Authorities hoped to have an agreement in place by the end of the year, but some media reports say plans are underway for meetings into 2018.
The proposals follow a trip by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to both Washington, and Mexico City. He admitted the possibility of a future without the trade agreement, saying Canada is ready for anything.
