HDSB Recommends Elimination of the Hybrid or “modified School day”

HDSB is recommending that the modified/ hybrid model be withdrawn from consideration citing the lack of childcare options, and additional health risks.

Ontario School Boards had been asked to submit three different plans to return to class including the modified day model which would involve smaller classes, and potential alternative day or week delivery.

HDSB made their decision following a motion presented emergency meeting on July 15, 2020. They informed Education Minister Stephen Lecce via a letter which, reads in part: “If childcare is unavailable or unaffordable, parents (mostly women, as noted by a number of experts and advocates) may have to leave the labour force to care for their children on out-of-school days.” Recent surveys indicate women made up 45% of the reduction of hours through April-May.

Their plans to return in the fall must be submitted for Ministry approval by August 4, 2020. For more information visit the website
