Thanks to a $26,084 grant from the Milton Community Fund, Halton Healthcare was able to purchase two blood gas analyzers for the Laboratory at Milton District Hospital (MDH).
“Blood gas analyzers assist in providing accurate and rapid blood gas results to all areas of the hospital, especially critical areas such as Emergency, Intensive Care Unit and Recovery,” said Dr. Gavin Hui, Associate Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine, MDH. “The analyzers are a vital addition to the hospital particularly as we see increases in levels of acuity and patient volumes.”
Over the past year, MDH has seen close to a 20 per cent increase in surgical volumes. The analyzers play a key role in the diagnosis of conditions such as sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to an infection, as well as the diagnosis of drug overdoses, kidney failure and shock.
“The analyzers are used on a daily basis by laboratory staff and results are available day and night,” said Mr. Wael Fathi, Senior Hematology Medical Laboratory Technologist. “This technology can provide over 15 critical care results very quickly,” he added.
