By Laura Steiner, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, The Milton Reporter

The 2025 federal election is now underway, with voting day scheduled for April 28, 2025. As part of a boundary review, Milton has been divided into two ridings: Burlington North- Milton West, and Halton Hills South- Milton East. To help voters make an informed decision, we are doing profiles of candidates from both ridings. April 16 2025, we emailed the same five questions to all candidates, giving a week in which to answer them . The final profiles will be posted in the order they are received.

Susan Doyle is CEO of her own Eco-education nonprofit. She is running for the Green Party of Canada.

1.According to Halton Regional Police, 52 cars have been stolen since January 1, of this year. What would your party do to stop

Green Party of Canada candidate for Milton-East Halton Hills-South Susan Doyle

it?

Susan Doyle: The Green Party is concerned with the safety and security of our communities as we work to build a more inclusive society. We have proposed strengthening appropriate laws and funding community programs. Everyone deserves to feel safe and welcome here in our community. This includes addressing discriminatory practices in public service to ensure every Canadian has a voice that represents them, treats them fairly and that they have the same chances to succeed. Systemically addressing the drivers behind theft and unlawful activity will bring us to a safe, inclusive community where everyone belongs.

2)  The average house price in Milton is $1,003,587. What is your party’s plan to make housing more affordable?

Susan Doyle: Housing is a human right. The Green Party believes that we need to get the federal government back to building housing! This is with a plan to set clear rules for what affordable actually means and to strengthen housing market regulations. The Green Party believes that when public money builds housing, it must be truly affordable.  This means an individual or family should be able to pay their rent or mortgage with 30% of their regular income.  Canada knows how to build good housing.  We have the workers, the materials, and the know-how – what is missing is government leadership. The Green Party will address loopholes to stop using real estate to hide money, eliminate the unfair tax advantages for investment trusts and stop corporations from buying single family homes.

    3) What makes your leader the best suited to be Prime Minister?

Susan Doyle: The Green Party has Co-Leaders balancing courage to do politics differently. Rooted in integrity, bold action and genuine connection to people. With leaders that have been on the frontline of global conflicts while also understanding the challenges here in Canada, they are working across party lines and bringing a new perspective to debates.  There will be a deep commitment to indigenous reconciliation, climate action, disability justice, inclusive rights and a stronger democracy where everyone can thrive. A Green voice is critical to ensure all issues are considered in policy development and true partnership, engagement  and reconciliation is at the heart of Canadian politics going forward.

 4) How will your party help farmers and the agriculture industry negate the impacts of climate change?

Susan Doyle: Working in this industry myself, I am deeply connected to the challenges farmers and the broader agricultural industry is facing.  The Green Party understands these challenges and is already advocating for policy to address the tariffs and interprovincial trade, while looking to new markets.  Also, the Green Party is committed to research and innovation for climate adaption. What is happening is a shift with that will require adaption to soil health and water conservation. Our environment os changing and cresting challenges was well as opportunities arose this industry.  Agriculture needs the support to adapt equipment and practices to continue to thrive and feed and feed our communities.

5) The CN Intermodal, and the Campbellville Quarry are two projects that have faced strong opposition in Milton. How do you intend to advocate on these issues on behalf of your constituents?

Susan Doyle: On behalf of the constituents, my neighbours and friends, I will continue to advocate in opposition of these 2 projects.  It is unsettling that community advocates have had to rally to protect their health and environment.  They need an ally in government to provide strong advocacy, support and someone who understands the policies to address the many challenges faced with these proposed projects. I am proud to have sustainable and green capital infrastructure and building experience.  I understand the details!
