The province of Ontario is banning gatherings of five people or more. The decision was made on the advice of the province’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams to combat the spread of COVID-19.
The order comes under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, and is effective with immediate effect. “I strongly encourage everyone to do the responsible thing and stay home unless absolutely necessary. I can assure everyone that we will do everything in our power to stop this virus in its tracks,” Premier Doug Ford said. Funerals will proceed with up to 10 people at one time.
The order will not apply to:
- Private households of five people or more
- Operating childcare centres supporting frontline healthcare workers, and first responders provided that the number of people does not exceed 50 people.
“These are extraordinary times that demand extraordinary measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect our people. Nothing is more important,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said. This replaces a previous order restricting gatherings to 250 people.
