Trump Speech Touches on Immigration, Buy American Plans

Donald Trump took advantage of a primetime speech to Congress Tuesday evening to outline his plans for Immigration, and a “Buy American” plan.

Trump appealed for compromise between Republicans and Democrats in Congress on Immigration.  “I believe that real and positive immigration reform is possible, as long as we focus on the following goals: to improve jobs and wages for Americans, to strengthen our nation’s security, and to restore respect,” he said according to the CBC.  Immigration reform has escaped his two predecessors.

He also touched on a new “Buy American, Hire American” initiative.  He plans to ask Congress for $1 trillion USD for US infrastructure backed by public and private capital.  Two principles would guide it: Buy American, and hire American.”

Trudeau Mentioned in Trump Speech

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau even made it into the speech.  Trump spoke of the women’s business group created with Justin Trudeau during his recent visit.  “With the help of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, we have formed a council with our neighbours in Canada to help ensure that women entrepreneurs have access to the networks, markets, and capital they need to start a business and live out their financial dreams,” he said.  The idea started after Trudeau’s Chief-Of-Staff Katie Telford raised it with White House aide Jared Kushner.

Other mentions of Canadian interests included plans for building the Keystone Pipeline, and the American withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
