Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile is on a two-day state visit to Canada. She was officially welcomed by Governor-General David Johnston to Ottawa earlier today.
Today’s activities include a meeting with Johnston, and a State Luncheon where both leaders spoke. “We’re so pleased to have this opportunity to return the hospitality of Chile and its people, and to welcome you to Canada,” Johnston said in prepared remarks. Johnston visited Santiago, Chile in 2014. He was given the key to the city, and declared an “Illustrious guest” by the Mayor.
Canada, and Chile are marking 75 years of diplomatic ties. This year marks 20 years since signing a free-trade deal. Canadian exports have increased to $2.9 billion as of 2014 during that period. The Canada-Chile Free Trade agreement is the first one Canada has signed with a South American country. Bachelet’s visit ends tomorrow.
