Milton Municipal Election FAQ

The nomination period for the municipal election opened this morning for municipal election candidates.   Anyone interested in running for office has until July 27 at 2 p.m. to sign nomination to run for office in municipal elections taking place October 22, 2018.

Who Qualifies to vote or run?

To vote in these elections you must be: a Canadian citizen 18 years of age or over.  According to provincial legislation, you or your spouse must own, rent or live in the municipality where are you voting.

To be a candidate you must be eligible to vote, a Canadian citizen 18 years of age of older.  You cannot hold other office (MP, MPP or senator), be an municipal employee, or judge.  You cannot run while serving a jail sentence.

What has changed in four years?

In the last four years Milton has undergone ward realignment.  A process that has reduced the wards from eight down to four.  The change was in order to accommodate the addition of two new Regional Councillors, meaning each of the four wards will now have its own regional councillor.  Candidates as well must have the signature of 25 voters.

Who do I vote for?

Voters will be choosing one candidate each for the offices of: Mayor, Regional Chair, Municipal Councillor, Regional Councillor, and School Board Trustee.

Where are the wards?

Ward 1:  Dubbed northwest Milton.  The boundaries stretch from highway 7 in the north all the way down to Derry Rd.  It includes Campbellville, Brookville, Moffat, as well a portion of Old Milton.

Ward 2: Northeast Milton: Boundaries from Sideroad 5 (Campbellville Rd) in the north down to Derry.  East: 401/407 interchange to highway 25 in the west.

Ward 3:  Southeast Milton: Boundaries from 407 in the east, to 25 highway/ Ontario St in the west.  Lower Base Line in the south to Derry Rd in the north.

Ward 4: Southwest Milton: Boundaries- East: 25 highway/ Ontario St.  West: Bell School Line, North: Derry Road, South: 1 Side Road.

School Trustees:

There will be five school trustees: two to represent Halton District School Board (HDSB), one representing Halton District Catholic School Board (HDCSB).  Two representing the French Catholic Schools.

When is voting day?

Voting Day is October 22, 2018.  Polls open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Results will be available to the public at the First Ontario Arts’ Centre.
