The first major storm of the winter is coming this way. Environment Canada has Milton under a Special Weather Statement for the weekend of January 19-20.
Periods of snow will begin Saturday morning, lasting into Sunday. Accumulations vary based on the proximity to Lake Ontario. Those living near the lake are advised to expect between 5-10 centimetres, while those north of highway 7 will get 2-5 centimetres. Roads, highways, and parking lots are expected to be slippery. The storm is expected to carry wind gusts of between 20-30 km/ hour, which, may cause blowing snow and low visibility.
Extremely cold temperatures are expected to follow with wind chill values dipping into the range of -20 to -30 degrees Celsius. The cold is expected to last into Monday morning.
