IRCC to Give Former International Students Chance to Remain on an Open Work Permit

By: Laura Steiner

Canada is giving former International Students the chance to remain in Canada.  The change will give foreign nationals affected by the pandemic, with expired post-graduation work permit (PGWP) the chance to apply for an open work permit.

” Their status may be temporary, but the contributions of international students are lasting.  This new policy means that young students from abroad who have studied here can stay and find work while ensuring that Canada meets the urgent needs of our economy for today and tomorrow,”  Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marco Mendicino said.  The federal government estimates foreign students contribute over $21 billion to the economy.   The visa would be extended up to 18 months.

More than 58,000 graduates applied to permanently immigrate to Canada in 2019.   For more information on who can apply visit this website.  The deadline to apply is July 27, 2021.
