The Halton Police are currently investigating multiple incidents, including a jewellery robbery involving an older man in Burlington, where two suspects forcibly stole items valued at approximately $2,500. Additionally, police are seeking to identify the owners of several stolen bikes and electric scooters recovered during a search in Milton, leading to the arrest of a 38-year-old male suspect.

HALTON POLICE INVESTIGATE JEWELLERY ROBBERY

The Halton Police are investigating a jewellery robbery involving an older man in Burlington.

The incident occurred a few days ago when the victim had just parked his car at the Navy Club on Industrial Street.

According to police, two suspects approached the victim in a vehicle. The passenger expressed interest in a gold ring the older man was wearing and forcibly removed it from his finger. During a brief struggle, the suspect also took a gold chain from the victim’s neck. In a deceptive exchange, the suspects handed the victim two fake gold pieces of jewelry before fleeing the scene. The estimated value of the stolen items is approximately $2,500.

Fortunately, the older man did not sustain any injuries during the incident. Investigators are currently working to obtain detailed descriptions of the suspects and their vehicles. There are concerns that these suspects may be targeting additional victims, attempting to trade worthless fake jewelry for valuable pieces.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is urged to contact the police.

POLICE LOOKING FOR OWNERS OF STOLEN BIKES

The Halton Police are looking to identify the owners of multiple stolen bikes and electric scooters recovered by police during the recent execution of a search warrant.

A few days back, police executed a warrant at a residence in the area of Yates Drive and Thompson Road South in Milton as part of an investigation into bike thefts taking place in Milton. Police recovered multiple stolen bikes and two electric scooters. Some of the bike’s owners have been identified. However, police are still looking to identify the owners of five bikes and the two electric scooters.

Anyone who had their bike or scooter stolen in the Milton area recently and did not report it to the police is asked to contact them.

On Oct. 12, the police also arrested a 38-year-old Milton man who was involved in this investigation. He has been charged with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, failure to comply with probation, theft under $5000, and unauthorized use of a credit card.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

ELDERLY BURLINGTON RESIDENT DIES IN ACCIDENT

The Halton Police responded to a severe motor vehicle collision at Dundas Street and Walkers Line intersection in the City of Burlington. A red Jeep Wrangler was travelling eastbound on Dundas Street when it collided with a westbound grey Ford Focus and turned left from Dundas Street onto Walkers Line.

The passenger of the Ford Focus, a 94-year-old Burlington resident, was transported to an out-of-region trauma centre and later died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit has assumed carriage of the investigation.

MILTON DRIVER CHARGED IN FATAL COLLISION

Investigators from the Collision Reconstruction Unit have charged Andrew Couto, a 35-year-old driver from Milton, with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death. This charge comes in connection with a severe motor vehicle collision that occurred on September 20, 2024, at approximately 5:00 PM at the intersection of Derry Road and Ontario Street South in Milton.

On that day, Couto was driving a GMC Sierra westbound on Derry Road when he collided with several vehicles at the intersection. The GMC continued moving forward, crossed the center median west of the intersection, overturned, and struck multiple eastbound cars before coming to rest in the eastbound lanes. Eight vehicles were involved in the incident.

One of the eastbound vehicles, a Toyota Corolla, was operated by a 55-year-old Milton man who sustained life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a trauma center where he remained in critical condition until succumbing to his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. Couto is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Milton at a later date.

ARREST MADE IN WANTED INVESTIGATION

The Halton Police have located and arrested 23-year-old Nana-Yaw Asante in Oshawa.

Prior to his arrest, the Halton Police had requested public assistance in locating Asante, who was wanted in connection with multiple offences, including attempted murder with a firearm, as charged by the Ontario provincial police. A warrant was sought by the police for the offence of unlawfully at large after Asante attended Burlington Court on Oct. 10, 2024, for an unrelated matter and was released from custody in error.
