The Halton police have made significant strides in addressing crime and improving public safety, with arrests in cases of armed home invasion, break-and-enter, and vehicle theft. The force also introduced a cutting-edge ballistics system to accelerate gun crime investigations. It launched an online collision reporting tool ahead of winter weather. These efforts highlight the Halton Regional Police Service’s commitment to innovative solutions and swift action to protect the community.
POLICE ARREST ONE, SEEK TWO AFTER ARMED HOME INVASION
The Halton Police have arrested one man and are searching for two suspects following an armed home invasion on Greeneagle Drive.
Officers were called to the scene around 4:50 a.m. after three suspects forced open the front door of a residence. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun, police said.
The suspects confronted a resident inside the home and demanded keys to vehicles parked in the driveway. The resident was punched multiple times during the altercation.
Police arrived shortly after and apprehended one of the suspects following a brief foot chase. Cleveland Vanevery, 23, of Oshweken, has been charged with robbery with a firearm, break and enter, disguise with intent, failing to comply with a release order, and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries, including a broken nose, and has since been released. Police said some stolen items were later recovered, but the handgun remains missing. No vehicles were stolen during the incident.
“I can only imagine the fear that was felt by the victim and his family when three armed men broke into their home at 5 a.m. and assaulted him, causing injuries, including a broken nose. Thankfully, the quick response of our front-line officers resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects near the scene,” said HRPS Chief Stephen Tanner.
Police are searching for two remaining suspects. One is described as a male with a heavy build, wearing black clothing and a black facemask or balaclava. The second is described as a thin male wearing light-coloured clothing and a black facemask.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Halton police.
TWO ARRESTED IN OAKVILLE BREAK-AND-ENTER INVESTIGATION
The Halton police have arrested two men and laid break-and-enter-related charges following a proactive traffic stop on Lions Valley Park Road.
Officers observed a white Dodge SUV parked suspiciously near the entrance to a trail system leading to Forest Manor Gate around 6:13 p.m. on Nov. 29. During the traffic stop, three suspects dressed in dark clothing fled from the vehicle.
Police immediately apprehended the driver and arrested a second suspect after a brief foot chase.
Following the investigation, Bastian Luciano Pinto Mell and Esteban Leonardo Beroiza Rios, both 28 and identified as Chilean nationals with no fixed address, were charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence — break and possession of break-and-enter instruments. Both remain in custody pending a bail hearing.
Police believe the two men are part of a South American Theft Group that targets Southern Ontario between late fall and early spring, committing organized residential break-and-enters. Efforts to identify and locate the two remaining suspects are ongoing.
HALTON POLICE LAY CHARGES AFTER VEHICLE THEFT
The Halton Police have arrested a Toronto man and laid multiple charges following the theft of a vehicle from a residential driveway in Oakville.
Police were called to a home near Neyagawa Boulevard and Ashdown Road around 10 p.m. on Nov. 29 after a Mercedes SUV was reported stolen. Two suspects were seen in the stolen vehicle, which fled the scene before officers arrived. The suspects did not enter the home.
The police used various techniques to track the stolen vehicle. Investigators located it in Toronto around 11:25 p.m.
As a result, Sean Paszkowski-Brown, 38, of Toronto, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle, and driving while under suspension under the Highway Traffic Act. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing. Police continued to search for a second suspect, who was described as a male dressed in all-black clothing and wearing a black mask.
POLICE LAUNCH NEW ONLINE TOOL FOR COLLISION REPORTING
With inclement weather on the horizon, the Halton Police have introduced a new online feature to streamline collision reporting for residents.
In partnership with Accident Support Services International, the police have launched the “Start from Your Device” service, designed for most property damage collisions that require a report.
Drivers involved in collisions can now begin reporting from their cell phone or computer. Whether an officer attends the scene, you contact Halton Police for guidance or, you visit the HRPS website or a police station, motorists will be directed to the “Start from Your Device” platform. This feature enables drivers to pre-fill collision report details before visiting accident support services locations in Halton. The police remind motorists to be aware of their responsibilities if involved in a collision, particularly as winter weather approaches.
POLICE TO DEPLOY CUTTING-EDGE BALLISTICS TECHNOLOGY
The Halton Police’s Forensic Services Unit has adopted groundbreaking technology to accelerate gun crime investigations and enhance public safety.
The Bullet and Casing Capture System by TSNUS uses advanced technology to quickly generate high-quality samples of spent bullets and casings from crime-related firearms and seized weapons. The system improves the speed and accuracy of comparing ballistics data to crime scene evidence, functioning as the firearms equivalent of DNA analysis. The HRPS is the first police service in Canada to implement this innovative tool, underscoring its commitment to improving investigative processes and securing justice for the Halton community and beyond.
