Community Development Halton (CDH) has been awarded a Fall 2024 grant from the Burlington Foundation’s Community Fund to support its Youth Leadership Project. The grant will help empower youth by providing leadership opportunities that amplify their voices in volunteerism and civic engagement, and influence the nonprofit sector to make volunteer opportunities more accessible and appealing to young people.

The project will be youth-led, elevating youth perspectives through research, workshops, and discussions to help Burlington’s nonprofits better understand the barriers and facilitators affecting youth involvement in volunteerism. The initiative aims to ensure that nonprofit organizations can create more inclusive and engaging opportunities for youth to get involved in their communities.

Rishia Burke, Executive Director of Community Development Halton, expressed excitement over the support: “We are thrilled that the Burlington Foundation has supported this project, which will place youth voices at the center of change. We look forward to learning from the young people in our community and helping to shape volunteerism and civic engagement opportunities in Burlington.”

Megan Tregunno, CEO of the Burlington Foundation, highlighted the significance of the project: “We are truly inspired by the missions of organizations like Community Development Halton. They are one of 33 organizations selected this year that contribute to creating a strong sense of belonging in our community. The Burlington Community Fund is made possible by generous community donors who are committed to helping others.”

The Burlington Foundation’s annual granting program distributes funds through the Burlington Community Fund, which is supported by community donations. In the Fall 2024 round, community organizations could apply for grants of up to $20,000. In total, the Foundation distributed $1.2 million to over 120 charitable organizations in 2023/24.

Since 1984, Community Development Halton has worked to improve the quality of life for all residents of Halton through research, community development, planning, and promoting volunteerism. CDH operates two key programs: Volunteer Halton and Social Planning, both of which support the nonprofit sector through capacity building, education, research, policy analysis, and advocacy.

Since its founding in 1999, the Burlington Foundation has been a trusted partner in local philanthropy, addressing community needs and partnering with donors to distribute grants and investments.
